A hoop is the start of a driveway court, not the end of it. The ball that lives outside has to survive concrete; the net dies every season or two; the rim on a budget portable eventually needs a spring; the light that adds an hour in October has to fit the pole; and the lines and chalk that turn a slab into a court are the cheapest upgrade on the whole site. What to buy first

A second outdoor ball in the right size. Rubber covers (Spalding Street and Street Phantom, Mikasa BX1000, Wilson NBA DRV) survive concrete; composites feel better and wear faster; and the NBA and USA Basketball youth standard specifies a size 5 (27.5 inches) at ages 7-8 and a size 6 (28.5) at 9-11, which most gift-givers get wrong. How the category divides

Balls, by cover and size. What decides the price

For balls, the cover: $17 rubber to $100 composite leather. For rims, the bolt pattern and the spring: $90 for a Silverback standard, $320 for Goalrilla's 180-degree rim. For lights, nothing much; all three are $290-$320 and the pole decides. For court kits, cardboard ($80-$200, Murray) versus reusable plastic ($329, Stencil Ease). For chalk, the count.
