Size first: what ball, what age
The NBA and USA Basketball youth standard recommends a size 5 ball (27.5 inches) for ages 7-8 and a size 6 (28.5) for 9-11, because a ball proportional to a child's hands “allows for better ball control.” Below 7, makers sell a size 4 (25.5). A regulation size 7 for a nine-year-old is the most common gift mistake on this page; it gets a two-handed heave and a lost interest. The Mikasa BX1000 lists sizes 4, 5, 6 and 7; Spalding's Street lists 5, 6 and 7. Buy the size the chart says, and if the child is between ages, the smaller one.
