Best basketball rebounders and return nets: makes, misses, and what fits your hoop

The three kinds, and why the difference is everything

Net-and-ramp rebounders (Dr. Dish iC3) hang a net above and around the rim so both makes and misses drop into a ramp; the shooter never chases a ball. Rim chutes (SKLZ Kick Out, Goalrilla Ball Return) attach under the rim and redirect balls that go through it; misses still bounce away. For free-throw and spot-up reps they double the pace; for a kid who misses more than makes they do nothing about the ball in the street. Pole-mounted nets (Goaliath return net, Silverback Passback) hang from the hoop's pole; the Goaliath tilts forward to roll balls back or back to stop them, the Passback is a high-tension passing wall rather than a shot return. The fit question is separate: rim chutes fit any rim, the iC3 needs a rim without a rear crossbar and a narrow board bracket (Dr. Dish's support page has the rule), and pole nets need a pole of a given size.

Weight on the rim

The iC3 is 35 lb and a steel rim chute like the KATOP is a few pounds of its own, both hanging from the rim. On a Goalrilla or Silverback glass in-ground with a heavy breakaway rim that is nothing; on a 44-inch portable with a classic rim on an HDPE board it is a lot, and the board will sag. The Kick Out is mostly polypropylene. Check the rim and board before buying a heavy return, and read Dr. Dish's compatibility note about rear crossbars and bracket width before buying the iC3.

Two balls, not one

Dr. Dish's 800-shots-an-hour figure assumes two basketballs cycling; a rim chute works best the same way. A second outdoor ball is the cheapest way to double any return's value; best outdoor basketballs.

Returns are not yard guards

A rim chute sends makes to the shooter and misses wherever they were going. If the problem is the street, the fix is a guard behind the hoop; yard guards and driveway nets.

Above $500 the category changes

Everything on this page returns the ball; nothing on it passes the ball. Warranties are short

One year on the iC3, Kick Out and Passback; 90 days on the Goaliath net; nothing published on the Goalrilla return or the portable rebounder. These live outdoors; bring the net-and-frame units in for winter.

Storage

The iC3 folds to 22 by 22 by 59 inches on wheels; the Goaliath net comes with a carry bag; the Kick Out stays on the rim. Where it lives in January is part of the decision.
