Basketball hoop height by age: the standard, the ball size, and the hoop that reaches it

The 7-8 and 9-11 rows are the published NBA and USA Basketball recommendations, which say lowering the basket “assists with developing proper shooting form and increases the opportunity for shooting success” and that a smaller ball proportional to children's hands “allows for better ball control.” The rows below age 7 are the makers' own age ratings for their products, because no governing body publishes a standard for preschoolers. The ball column for 12-14 varies by league; the standard document specifies the shot clock for that band rather than the ball.

The 12 row is the one that changes how you shop. Once the rim reaches regulation it does not come back down, so the lowest setting on a hoop — the specification this whole category markets on — stops mattering from that birthday onward. Why the rim should be lower

A 9-year-old shooting at 10 feet heaves from the hip with two hands, because the ball is too heavy for the arc the height demands. At 9 feet the same child shoots with one hand and a guide hand, elbow under the ball, and the shot goes in often enough to keep them shooting. That is the standard's whole argument, and it is why an adjustable hoop matters more for a 9-year-old than for a 16-year-old. Below age 7
