Material and pole columns are what the makers publish for the models we rank; Lifetime's backboard guide lists its Impact boards at 32-44 inches, Shatterproof Fusion at 42-50, steel-framed polycarbonate and acrylic at 44-54, and tempered glass at 50, 54, 60 and 72. Goalrilla makes 54, 60 and 72 in every series. The width column is arithmetic (board width plus room to bank a shot from either wing), not a maker's figure.

Driveway width is the whole decision

A backboard's job is to give you the bank shot. From the wing, the ball has to hit glass that is over pavement, or you are standing on the lawn to take it. A 60-inch board is five feet wide; centered on a 22-foot driveway it leaves 8.5 feet each side, which is a comfortable wing shot. The same board on a 10-foot slab leaves 2.5 feet, and its edges are over the grass and the neighbor's side; a 54 leaves 2.75 and stays on the pavement. A 72 needs the corners, and the corners of a half court are 25 feet apart at the baseline, which is why the 72 column says 30 feet. Measure from where the pole will stand, not the whole driveway: a pole beside a garage on a two-car slab may only have one car's width to play in front of it.

Each size, in one paragraph

44 inches is a first hoop: HDPE or polycarbonate, a 27-gallon base, telescoping poles, under $200. Bank shots die on it and it does not matter, because the child is eight. 48 to 50 is the same idea on a better base (35 gallons) with a breakaway rim; the Lifetime 71566 and Silverback NXT 50 live here and fit a single-car slab well. 54 is where the makers start building seriously: 3/8-inch glass on the Goalrilla FT54, a steel chassis on the NXT 54, Power Lift on the Lifetime 71524; it is the right board for one car and the smallest one adults do not outgrow. 60 is the two-car board and the one most families should buy; every maker's mid and premium line centers on it. 72 is regulation, 72x42, and worth its price only on a wide pad or a purpose-built half court. 54 vs 60 vs 72 takes the three full sizes one level deeper.

Board height and thickness

Width gets the attention; height and thickness decide how the board plays. Goalrilla's FT54 is 54x36, the GS54C 54x34, the Silverback SB54 54x33; the FT60 is 60x38, the GS60C 60x36, the SB60 and Ignite 60x33; the FT72 72x42, the GS72C 72x40. Glass is 3/8 inch on the Goalrillas, 5/16 on the Silverbacks and Goaliaths, 1/2 on Pro Dunk and Mega Slam. A taller, thicker board is stiffer: it rebounds more consistently and shakes less after a shot.
