The real limit on practice is the ball in the street

A driveway hoop does not limit how many shots a kid takes; the walk to fetch the ball does. A rebounder that sends makes back doubles a free-throw session, a net that catches misses too triples a jump-shot session, and a yard guard behind the hoop is the difference between a driveway court and a street with a hoop next to it. For a free-throw shooter on a budget, the SKLZ Kick Out, which clips to any rim for $45 and kicks made shots back. For a driveway that slopes to the street, a yard guard that fits the pole: Goalrilla's for 5x5 and up, Silverback's for 4x4 Silverback and Goaliath poles, the Goaliath return net for most other in-ground poles. How the category divides

Three kinds of return: net-and-ramp rebounders that catch makes and misses (iC3), rim chutes that redirect makes only (SKLZ Kick Out, Goalrilla Ball Return), and pole-mounted nets that stop or roll back anything behind the hoop (Goaliath return net, Silverback Passback). Two kinds of guard: the brand-specific yard guards and the universal pole net. What decides the price

Whether it returns misses. Rim chutes are $45 to $150 and return makes; the iC3 is $500 and returns everything. Yard guards are $220 to $320 and are pole-specific. The small aids are $18 to $50 and fit any rim or any ball of the right size. All of it carries short warranties (one year on SKLZ and the iC3, 90 days on Escalade's guard and net, none published on several), and all of it lives outside; the frames come in for winter.

Fit, before anything

The iC3 hangs 35 lb off the rim and needs a rim with no rear crossbar and a narrow board bracket (Dr. Dish's support page has the rule); a 44-inch HDPE portable will sag under it. The Goalrilla Yard Guard fits 5x5, 5.5x5.5, 6x6 and 6x8 Goalrilla poles and not the Fixed Height models. The Silverback Yard Guard fits 4x4 Silverback SB/SBX and Goaliath poles and says it is not compatible with Goalrilla; the round-pole NXT and GoTek in-grounds say they fit no guard at all. The mistake buyers make here

Buying a rim chute to solve a street problem. A chute returns the shots that go in; the ones that miss still roll downhill. If the ball is in the road, the answer is a guard behind the hoop or a net-and-ramp that catches misses, and it costs more than $45. If the problem is a nine-year-old's shooting form, the answer is a lower rim and a smaller ball before any of this; hoop height by age is the free training aid.
