What each one fixes
Form: the Square Up strap fits a 28.5 or 29.5 ball and marks where the hands go and whether the ball spins straight; a shooter sees the triangle wobble on a thumb-flick. Aim: the Shooting Target hooks an 8-inch yellow ball in the middle of the rim so the eyes lock on the center rather than the front iron. Reps: the Kick Out sends made shots back so a free-throw session is shots, not walks. Contest: the D-Man is a hands-up defender that telescopes from 6.5 to 8 feet, so the shot is practiced over something. Strength: the 3-lb Heavy Weight Control ball is for dribbling and passing drills that build fingers and forearms, and SKLZ's own description keeps it there; shooting a 3-lb ball teaches a bad arc. Buyer's guide: shooting aids
Match the aid to the problem, not the age
A 9-year-old with a two-hand heave needs a lower rim first (hoop height by age), then the Square Up. A 15-year-old with good form who misses long needs the Target and reps.
Ball size limits the strap
The Square Up fits 28.5 and 29.5 balls; a size 5 (27.5) youth ball is too small for it. Basketball size by age.
Do not shoot the heavy ball
SKLZ describes the 3-lb ball for handling, passing and rebounding strength. Use it for dribbling drills and chest passes against a wall or the Passback net, then pick up the real ball to shoot.
Static Shot is a fix for a symptom
Escalade sells it for its own 4x4 two-piece-pole hoops. It works on the hoop you have; on a hoop you have not bought, spend the $200 toward a one-piece pole.
