Rubber vs composite on concrete
Concrete and asphalt sand a ball's cover every time it bounces. Rubber covers (Spalding Street and Phantom, Mikasa BX1000, Wilson DRV) are made for it: the pebbling wears slowly, the channels stay deep, and the ball keeps its grip for seasons. Composite covers (Goalrilla's indoor/outdoor and Hype balls) feel closer to a leather game ball, which is why players prefer them, and wear faster on rough pavement; the makers rate them for outdoor use, and they are, but expect a shorter life on a rough slab. Indoor leather balls should not go outside at all. The other outdoor problem is air: a ball left in the sun loses pressure, and Wilson's inflation-retention lining is a real feature at $17.

Sizes, and why they matter more than brand
The NBA and USA Basketball youth standard: size 5 (27.5 inches) for ages 7-8, size 6 (28.5) for 9-11, with a smaller ball “more proportional to the size of children's hands” allowing “better ball control.” A size 4 (25.5) is for younger children. Of the six here, the Mikasa comes in all four sizes, the Spalding Street in 5, 6 and 7, the Goalrilla Hype line in 5, 6 and 7 across its youth, women's and men's balls, and the Phantom and Goalrilla composite in 7 only. Buyer's guide: outdoor balls
Buy two
Every rebounder's rate assumes two balls, and one is always in the neighbor's yard. The Mikasa and the Wilson are cheap enough that two is the default.
Check the pressure monthly
Outdoor balls lose air in sun and cold; a pump with a gauge and the pressure printed on the ball is the whole maintenance routine.
Keep it off the wet concrete
A ball that sits in a puddle overnight swells its channels and loses grip. A bin by the garage door is the fix; a hoop-mounted ball holder (Silverback sells one) is the tidy version.
Rims and nets wear too
A ball that lives outside meets a net that lives outside; best replacement nets is the other cheap annual purchase.
