Rail mount or deck base: answer this first
Poolside basketball hoops come in two forms and only one of them works on a bare above-ground pool. A deck hoop stands on a flat surface and is held down by 200 to 500 lb of water or sand in its base. A rail hoop clamps onto the aluminum or resin top rail that runs around the pool wall. If you have a full deck to one side, a deck hoop is the better product by a wide margin. If the pool is freestanding with a ladder and nothing else, the rail mount is the only thing that works.
That fork also explains the price gap on this page. A rail hoop is $60 to $80 of blow-molded plastic. A deck hoop with a stainless rim is $400. They are not really competing; they are answers to different backyards. If you have the deck, read the pool hoop roundup instead, because it ranks the heavier hoops properly.
The numbers
Measure the rail first
Top rails on above-ground pools run roughly 4 to 8 inches wide depending on the model and year, and some have a resin cap profile that a flat clamp will not sit on. Poolmaster publishes the number: the 72774 perma-top version needs a 4-inch or wider top rail, and the 72784 is the bracket-mount version for everything else. Swimline says only that the Jammin' design attaches to the top rail, with no width stated anywhere we could read, which is the single reason it does not win this page outright at its price.
So take a tape to the rail before you order, note the width and whether the cap is flat or contoured, and buy the version that matches. A rail hoop that does not clamp properly is not a hoop that comes loose later; it is a hoop that never goes on.
Taking the pool down
A perma-top mount is permanent, which is a real consideration for anyone who breaks the pool down each autumn. The bracket version and the Swimline clamp both come off. If the pool is seasonal, buy the removable one, and store the hoop dry rather than leaving it in a shed full of chlorine.

Buyer's guide: an above-ground pool hoop
Rail width, then everything else
Measure it. Poolmaster needs 4 inches or wider for the perma-top; the bracket version is the fallback. No other spec matters if the clamp does not fit.
Expect plastic, and price accordingly
Rail hoops are blow-molded and use PVC or plastic rims: a 14-inch PVC hoop on the Poolmaster, an unpublished rim on the Swimline. At $60 to $80 that is the deal. Neither publishes a warranty term.
A soft ball, always
Both rail hoops ship with their own ball (Swimline's “real feel” ball, Poolmaster's 8.5-inch game ball with a needle). A regulation basketball on a plastic rail rim is how the rim breaks.
If you have any deck at all, use it
Even a small deck pad lets you stand the GoSports Splash Hoop PRO, which at 50 lb filled has a real 14-inch rim and a 34 x 25-inch HDPE board for $129.99. A full deck opens up the Dunn-Rite Splash & Shoot and its 18-inch stainless rim.
Drain before the freeze
Any filled base must be drained before the first hard frost. This applies to the deck hoops here, not the rail mounts, which have nothing to fill.
