What kills a pool hoop
Three things, in order. Corrosion: a painted steel rim in a chlorinated or salt pool loses its coating in a season and then rusts orange streaks down the deck. Ultraviolet: an unprotected plastic backboard goes chalky and brittle in two summers of direct sun. And leverage: a pool hoop is the one hoop where players are weightless and grab the rim constantly, which loads the post and tips a light base into the water.
That is why the answers on this page look different from a driveway hoop. Rim material matters more than rim size. Base weight matters more than backboard glass (nobody makes a glass pool backboard, and nobody should). And a published salt-compatibility statement is worth paying for if you run a salt system, because the makers who do not publish one are usually the ones using plated hardware.
The numbers
Ballast, and the sloped deck
The base numbers here span an order of magnitude: 50 lb on the GoSports, 200 lb on the Splash & Shoot, 500 lb on the Splash & Slam. Filled weight is the single best predictor of whether the hoop is still upright in August. Fifty pounds is enough to resist a shot and not enough to resist a rim grab. Two hundred pounds handles normal family play. Five hundred pounds is what you need if adults are dunking.
Pool decks also slope, by design, away from the water for drainage. That means a base sitting flat on the deck leans toward the pool before anyone touches it. Dunn-Rite publishes a 4-way leveling system on the Splash & Slam specifically for this; the others do not, so you are shimming. Check the slope with a level before you choose, because on a steep deck it is the deciding spec.
The ball, and the other pool question
Pool hoops ship with their own ball for a reason: a real leather or composite basketball absorbs water, gets heavy and is ruined. Dunn-Rite includes a 9-inch regulation-diameter pool ball, Swimline includes a regulation-size ball, GoSports includes two inflatable water balls and a pump. Buyer's guide: choosing a pool hoop
Stainless or coated stainless, never painted steel
Both Dunn-Rite hoops use an 18-inch vinyl-coated stainless rim and publish salt compatibility. That is the spec that decides whether the hoop looks good in year three.
Fill with water, then think about sand
Every base here fills with water; Swimline and Dunn-Rite also take sand. Sand is roughly 40 percent heavier per gallon and does not slosh, which is worth the extra work on a windy or sloped deck.
Measure the deck slope
Pool decks slope away from the water. Only the Splash & Slam publishes a leveling system; on the others, plan on shims and check the post is plumb after filling.
Rim height is not driveway height
These hoops set the rim 2 to 6 feet above the deck, not 10. Water is the difference: a swimmer jumps from buoyancy, so a 4-foot rim plays like a high one. Do not buy on rim height alone.
Take it in for the winter
Drain the base before the first freeze. A full base that freezes splits, and a split base is not a warranty claim on any of these.
