Base stability and fill, 25%: published gallons, whether there is a steel frame, how the pole meets the base, wheels. Backboard, 20%: size and material as published. Height adjustment, 15%: range, increments and mechanism. Assembly, 10%: the maker's own claim, quoted. Warranty, 15%: the term as written on the maker's page or, where the maker is silent, as its dealers state it, flagged as such. Value, 15%: the maker's list price where published. Lifetime does not publish list prices or, on most pages, base capacity; where a dealer spec sheet fills the gap, the card says so. We have not assembled any of these and do not print Amazon prices.
The numbers
The base is the hoop
Every portable stands in a socket molded into a plastic base filled with water or sand. The socket is where the leverage of a 10-foot pole and a swinging backboard concentrates, and a cracked socket or a split seam is the failure portable owners most commonly report. Goalrilla's own blog puts the average portable's life at two to five years. Two designs push against that: the Silverback NXT bolts its pole to a steel frame beneath the base (Escalade's Stabili-Frame), and the Lifetime Mammoth uses a metal-framed base with cement anchors in the box so the hoop can be bolted to the slab. Spalding's Beast attacks it with mass: 40 or 55 gallons on four wheels. Everything else here relies on gallons alone, and the published numbers (27 on the Lifetime 90040, 35 on the 71566, 36 on the Spalding Momentous) are the ones to compare.
What we left out, and why
No 72-inch portables: The Beast comes in 72 and the page covers the series, but a six-foot glass board on a wheeled base is a specialty purchase; it appears on the 72-inch page. No sub-$100 hoops: below the Lifetime 90040 the boards are too small to bank a shot on. And nothing we could not find a maker's or dealer's spec page for.

Buyer's guide: a portable that stays up
Sand, not water, in any climate that freezes
Water expands in the base when it freezes, and a hairline crack empties it over a summer. Sand is heavier, does not freeze, and stays put. Fill through a funnel from bags of play sand; a 35-gallon base takes roughly four 50-lb bags.
Overhang matters on portables too
The NXT gives 26 inches of clear space under the goal; the Spalding Momentous 18; the Lifetime 71566 18. A player driving to the rim on an 18-inch portable is a foot closer to the pole than on the NXT.
Read the minimum height
Most portables run 7.5 to 10 feet; the Spalding Momentous H-frame starts at 8. For a 7-year-old on the 8-foot youth standard either works; for a 5-year-old neither does. Portables for kids covers the lower ranges.
Assemble it once, well
Escalade claims 90 minutes for the NXT, Spalding 30 for the Momentous; both assume two people and the parts laid out first. How to assemble a portable is the order of operations that avoids taking the pole apart twice.
Then the ball and a return net
An outdoor ball that survives concrete (best outdoor basketballs) and, if the driveway slopes to the street, a return net (best rebounders).
