What $200 buys, and what it does not
A note on prices first. Lifetime does not publish list prices on lifetime.com, Escalade's cheapest portable lists at $499.95, and Amazon prices move daily. So “under $200” here means the hoops whose makers position them at the bottom of their ranges and that sell in that band; the button on each card shows the price today. What the band buys: a 44-inch high-density polyethylene board (Lifetime's Impact) or, at the top of the band, a 50-inch steel-framed polycarbonate one; a 27-to-35-gallon base with wheels; a three-piece round pole; and either a telescoping adjustment or Lifetime's one-hand Action Grip. What it does not buy: a breakaway rim on the 44-inch (the 50-inch has Lifetime's Slam-It), a board you can bank a shot off with confidence, or a base that tolerates adult play. All four picks are Lifetime or Little Tikes because those are the makers whose pages we could read and whose warranties are published; Lifetime's is 5 years on most basketball systems.
The numbers
The catch with cheap portables
An HDPE board is a plastic lid: bank shots die on it. A three-piece 2.75-inch pole flexes when the ball hits the rim. A 27-gallon base filled with water is 225 lb, which a gust catches if the board is up. None of that is a defect; it is what $150 of hoop is. It is also fine for a 9-year-old shooting free throws, which is what this budget is for. The upgrade path from here is not a better cheap hoop; it is the Silverback NXT 50 or Lifetime 71524 at $400-$500, which the under-$500 list covers.

Buyer's guide: spending $200 on a hoop
Put the savings into sand
Four 50-lb bags of play sand fill a 27-gallon base and cost less than a ball. A sand-filled 90040 is a different hoop from a water-filled one in wind.
Buy the right ball size
Size 5 at 7-8, size 6 at 9-11, per the NBA/USA Basketball standard; a $17 Mikasa BX1000 comes in every size. Basketball size by age.
Keep it out of the wind
Lower the rim to 7.5 feet when a storm is coming, or lay it down. A 44-inch board at 10 feet on 225 lb of water is the portable that ends up in the street. Wind and tipping.
Expect to replace it
Goalrilla's blog says two to five years for portables generally; a $150 hoop with a 5-year Lifetime warranty is a reasonable bet that the child outgrows it first.

Is a $150 basketball hoop worth it?
For a child 7 to 12 shooting in the driveway, yes: it adjusts to the youth standard heights and Lifetime warrants it for 5 years. It is not a hoop for adult play or bank shots.
