The height standard by age
The NBA and USA Basketball youth guidelines recommend an 8-foot basket with a size 5 ball (27.5 inches) for ages 7-8 and a 9-foot basket with a size 6 ball (28.5) for ages 9-11; 12-14 plays at 10 feet. Below 7 there is no official standard, and the makers fill the gap: Little Tikes runs 2.5-4 feet for 18 months to 5 years and 4-6 feet on the Adjust 'n Jam Pro; Lifetime's youth hoop runs 5.5-7.5. The right hoop is the one whose range covers the child now and for the next three or four years, which is why the 7.5-to-10-foot Lifetime 44-inch wins the widest age band: an 8-year-old at 7.5 feet becomes a 14-year-old at 10 on the same hoop. What matters on a kids' hoop
The bottom of the range, not the top: a hoop that only drops to 8 feet is useless for a 5-year-old. Buyer's guide: hoops for kids
Buy the ball to match
A size 5 (27.5 inch) for ages 7-8 and size 6 (28.5) for 9-11 per the NBA/USA Basketball standard, a size 4 (25.5) or a junior ball for younger kids. Spalding's Street and Mikasa's BX1000 come in youth sizes; basketball size by age has the table.
Fill the base with sand
A 27-gallon base on the Lifetime 90040 holds about 225 lb of water or more of sand. Sand does not freeze and does not leak; it also makes the hoop harder to tip when a 6-year-old swings from the net.
Lower it, do not raise it
The point of the youth standard is that a lower rim teaches proper shooting form. A 9-year-old at 10 feet heaves; at 9 feet they shoot. Put the rim where the child makes shots, and raise it a foot a year.
Skip glass until they are 12
