How high should the rim be for a 5-year-old?
There is no official standard below age 7. The NBA and USA Basketball guidelines start at 8 feet for ages 7-8, and the reasoning they give applies below that too: a lower basket lets a child shoot with real form instead of heaving. In practice a five-year-old makes shots on a rim between 4 and 6 feet, and the makers agree: Little Tikes rates the Easy Score (2.5-4 ft) for 18 months to 5 years and the Adjust 'n Jam Pro at 4-6 ft; Lifetime's youth hoop covers 5.5-7.5 ft for “youth and beginning players.” The question is not just where the rim goes today but whether the hoop still has a setting in two years, when the 8-foot standard arrives and a 4-6 ft toy is done.

Buyer's guide: the five-year-old's hoop
Buy a size 4 or junior ball
A regulation size 7 is 29.5 inches and too big for five-year-old hands. Mikasa's BX1000 comes in a 25.5-inch size 4; Little Tikes sells a four-pack of junior balls. Basketball size by age has the sizes.
Plan the next hoop now
At seven the standard moves to 8 feet and at nine to 9 feet, and a 44-inch Lifetime that runs 7.5-10 feet covers both and high school. If the budget allows, skip the middle stage: buy a 44-inch portable at seven and use a chalk line, not a toy hoop, in between. The 10-year-old page is the next step.
Weight the base
Fill the Lifetime's base with sand, and put a bag of sand or a paver on a toddler set's base if there is an older child in the house. Tipping is the injury, not the shot.
Add chalk
