The ball and the rim come first
The NBA and USA Basketball youth guidelines are the only training aid with a governing body behind them: an 8-foot rim and a size 5 ball for ages 7-8, a 9-foot rim and a size 6 for 9-11, because a smaller ball “allows for better ball control” and a lower rim “assists with developing proper shooting form.” A child heaving a 29.5-inch ball at a 10-foot rim is not practicing; they are throwing. So the first two purchases are the right ball and an adjustable hoop set to the standard (hoop height by age). Everything else on this page is for after that.

What not to buy a kid
A weighted ball (SKLZ's 3-lb trainer is for handling strength and SKLZ does not describe it as a shooting aid; for a child it is too heavy for either). A 35-lb rim rebounder on a 44-inch portable, which will sag the board. A 29.5 ball before the standard says so. And any aid before the rim is at the right height, because the rim is the aid.

Buyer's guide: kids' training aids
One aid at a time
A target and a strap and a return all at once is a lot of hardware for a nine-year-old. Add the target when aim is the problem, the return when the ball keeps rolling away, the strap when the rotation is sideways.
Rims and fit
