Why 54 inches
A 54-inch board is 4.5 feet wide. On a 10-to-12-foot single-car driveway it leaves about 3 feet of pavement on each side of the board, enough to take a short bank shot without stepping onto the lawn; a 60-inch board on the same slab hangs its edges over the grass and the neighbor's side. Measure to the garage door track
On a single-car driveway the hoop often ends up beside the garage rather than in front of it. A 54-inch board centered on a 10-foot slab still needs the pole 2 to 3 feet off the edge for overhang. Where to put a basketball hoop.
Overhang is where the portables and in-grounds split
