Why 54 inches
A 54-inch board is 4.5 feet wide. On a 10-to-12-foot single-car driveway it leaves about 3 feet of pavement on each side of the board, enough to take a short bank shot without stepping onto the lawn; a 60-inch board on the same slab hangs its edges over the grass and the neighbor's side. It is also the smallest board the makers put real construction behind: Goalrilla's FT54 gets the same 3/8-inch glass and one-piece 5x5 pole as its bigger siblings; Lifetime frames its 54s in steel; Silverback's NXT 54 gets the Stabili-Frame chassis. Glass at 54 inches
The FT54 (3/8 inch), SB54 (5/16 inch) and Lifetime Mammoth (3/8 inch) are tempered glass; the NXT 54 and Lifetime 71524 are polycarbonate; the Spalding Momentous is acrylic. On a one-car driveway where the board edges are near the lawn and the mower, the shatter question is real, and the polycarbonate portables are a rational answer for a family with young kids. Measure to the garage door track
On a single-car driveway the hoop often ends up beside the garage rather than in front of it. A 54-inch board centered on a 10-foot slab still needs the pole 2 to 3 feet off the edge for overhang. Where to put a basketball hoop.
Overhang is where the portables and in-grounds split
The NXT gives 26 inches under the goal; the Momentous 18; the FT54 36; the SB54 24. A player finishing at the rim on an 18-inch portable is a foot and a half from the pole.
If you can dig, the SB54 is the value
Under $1,000 at sale price, single-piece 4x4, tempered glass, bolt-down anchor, nine bags per the Escalade manual. Best in-ground hoops under $1,000.
If you will upgrade, buy the anchor
