The three trades under $1,000
Every in-ground hoop under a thousand dollars gives something up against the two-thousand-dollar ones, and it is always one of three things. Glass or polycarbonate. Tempered glass rebounds like a gym and stays clear; polycarbonate cannot shatter but rebounds softer and scratches over years. The Ignite, Prodigy, SB54, SBX 60 and SB54iG are glass; the NXT and GoTek are polycarbonate; the Spalding U-Turn is acrylic, which sits between them. Bolt-down or direct-bury. A bolt-down hoop stands on an anchor plate and can be unbolted and moved; a direct-bury hoop sets the pole in the concrete forever. One-piece or two-piece pole. The Silverback SB54 and SBX are single-piece 4x4s; the Goaliath Ignite and Prodigy are two-piece 4x4s; the NXT and GoTek are 3.5-inch round direct-bury poles. Owners of two-piece and round poles commonly report more shake after a shot than one-piece owners do, and Escalade sells a $200 Static Shot damper for exactly that reason.

The numbers
What the install asks for at this price
The 7-inch Escalade anchor used by the Ignite, Prodigy, SB54 and SBX 60 is documented in the Silverback SB60 manual: a 16-inch-diameter hole 36 inches deep with a 20-inch form at the top, nine 80-lb bags of concrete, four #3 rebar, a minimum 72-hour cure, four adults on day 5. The direct-bury NXT and GoTek pour concrete inside and around the pole itself; Escalade's product pages do not publish those hole sizes, so read the paper manual in the box before you rent an auger. Spalding's U-Turn uses a 4-inch square ground sleeve. Whatever you buy, call 811 first: it is free and the manuals say so on page one. How to install an in-ground hoop has the day-by-day.

Buyer's guide: spending under $1,000 well
Sale price is the real price at Escalade
The Ignite lists at $2,049.95 and sells at $999.95; the Prodigy lists at $1,599.95 and sells at $799.95. Those sale prices have been the effective prices on goalrilla.com; treat the list price as decoration and the sale price as the number to beat on Amazon.
Pads are $250 you do not have to spend
The Ignite, SB54, SB54iG and SBX 60 include a pole pad, and most include a backboard pad. Goalrilla charges $189.95 for its 5x5 pad alone. If a hoop under $1,000 does not include a pad, add $85 for a Silverback pole pad before you compare prices.
A polycarbonate hoop is a real hoop
The NXT 60 and GoTek 54 rebound softer than glass and their boards will pick up scratches, but they will not shatter when a bat or a rock hits them and they cost $570 to $770. For a family with kids under 12, that is a rational purchase, and both carry the same 5-year term as the glass Silverbacks. Glass vs acrylic vs polycarbonate explains the rebound difference.

At Escalade's sale prices, the Goaliath Ignite 60 ($999.95): 60x33 tempered glass, a bolt-down 7-inch anchor, board and pole pads included, 5-year term. The Silverback SB54 ($969.95) has a single-piece pole and is the better one-car-driveway hoop.
Can you get a tempered glass in-ground hoop under $1,000?
Yes: the Goaliath Ignite 60 and Prodigy 54, the Silverback SB54, SBX 60 and SB54iG all list tempered glass on their product pages at sale prices under $1,000. All are 5/16-inch or unpublished thickness; 3/8-inch glass starts with the Goalrilla GS54C at $1,749.95.
Is a direct-bury hoop worse than a bolt-down hoop?
It is permanent, not worse. The pole is set in concrete, so it cannot be unbolted and moved, and Escalade's Yard Guard and anchor accessories do not fit the round-pole NXT and GoTek. If you never plan to move it, direct-bury saves money.
How much concrete does a sub-$1,000 in-ground hoop need?
For the 7-inch Escalade anchor (Ignite, Prodigy, SB54, SBX 60) the SB60 manual says nine 80-lb bags in a 16-inch by 36-inch hole. Direct-bury hole sizes are not on the product pages; use the manual in the box. How much concrete does the math.
