Spalding vs Lifetime portable hoops: the two biggest names, at two price tiers

The verdict

Mid tier: Spalding Momentous 54 vs Lifetime 71524

The Momentous is the better-specified hoop on paper: a 36-gallon base, an 18-inch offset, a 2.75-inch square pole, an Arena Slam breakaway rim, an acrylic board with arena padding, and a 30-minute assembly claim. Its two catches are an 8-foot minimum height and Spalding's one-year systems warranty. The Lifetime 71524 is a polycarbonate board on a three-piece 3.5-inch round pole, a Slam-It Pro rim with a wraparound brace, and a Power Lift that moves the rim one-handed from 7.5 to 10 feet in infinite increments; Lifetime does not publish its base capacity or list price, but it does state a 5-year warranty. For a driveway with a 7-year-old, the 7.5-foot floor and the one-hand lift decide it for Lifetime; for a driveway with a 14-year-old, the Momentous's base and board are the nicer hoop.

Glass tier: the Ultimate Hybrid vs the Lifetime Mammoth

The Ultimate Hybrid is a 54-inch tempered glass board with aluminium trim on a three-piece 4-inch pole, with a screw-jack lift, a board pad and four wheels and a screw-jack lift, priced from $1,799.99 into in-ground territory. The Mammoth is 3/8-inch tempered glass in a steel frame on a 3.5-inch square pole over a metal-framed base that ships with cement anchors, with Lifetime's squeeze-lever Mammoth Lift. Lifetime calls it semi-portable, and that is the honest framing for both: a filled 55-gallon Beast base is roughly 455 lb of water, and a Mammoth bolted to the slab does not move at all. The Ultimate Hybrid wins on the board pad and the screw-jack lift; the Mammoth wins on price and warranty, and on being the one you can actually anchor with the parts in the box.

Warranty: one year vs five

Spalding's warranty page: basketball systems are “covered by a 1-year Limited Warranty for defects in materials and workmanship,” original purchaser, personal use only, with rust, weather deterioration, hanging and scratches excluded. Lifetime's FAQ: “Most Lifetime Products Basketball Systems have a 5-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects,” with glass breakage, rust and improper installation excluded. On a category where the base is what fails in year two or three, four extra years of coverage is the largest single difference between these brands.
