The four mechanisms
Telescoping (Lifetime 90040, Lifetime Youth): lift the upper pole and drop it into the next hole, 6-inch steps, no tools, an adult's job on a 44-inch board. Crank actuator (every Goalrilla, Silverback and Goaliath; Spalding's U-Turn and screw jack): a removable handle turns a screw; Silverback's NXT moves in 6-inch increments, Goalrilla's are continuous, and the handle is the most-lost part on any driveway (Goalrilla sells a locking replacement). One-hand lift (Lifetime Power Lift, Action Grip, Mammoth Lift): squeeze a lever and glide the rim to any height, infinite increments; a nine-year-old can do it. Internal compression (Goalsetter): the mechanism is inside the pole with, Goalsetter says, no pinch or grab points. The floor is separate from the mechanism: most stop at 7.5 feet, which suits the NBA/USA Basketball standard (8 feet at ages 7-8) but not a five-year-old.

A lower floor is not free. Spalding's 7-foot U-Turn Pro comes with a 1-year systems warranty; Goalsetter's 6-foot internal mechanism comes on a $2,900-$3,150 hoop sold direct; Pro Dunk's 5-foot range comes with a 15-20 bag install. For most families the 7.5-foot floor on a Silverback or Goalrilla, set at 8 feet for the 7-year-old, is the practical answer, and the years before that belong to a youth hoop from the kids' ranking.

Buyer's guide: adjustable hoops
Match the floor to the youngest child, the ceiling to the oldest
Ten feet is the ceiling on everything here. The floor is what varies; if the youngest is under 7 and the hoop is permanent, buy the floor. Hoop height by age gives the setting per year.
Keep the crank handle
Escalade's crank hoops ship with a removable handle. Hang it inside the garage door. Goalrilla's replacement with a lock is $29.95 and also stops the neighborhood from lowering your rim to dunk on it.
Infinite increments are a convenience, 6-inch stops are a feature
Power Lift lets you set 8 feet 3 inches; the NXT's stops make sure it goes back to exactly 9 feet. Both are fine. What is not fine is a telescoping pole on a heavy board; keep telescoping to 44-inch hoops.
An adjustable in-ground still needs the anchor leveled
The rim height on a crank hoop is only right if the pole is plumb; a half-degree of lean is an inch at the rim. The install guide covers leveling nuts and a post level.
