Fit first, width second
Escalade sells the two real yard guards and they are not interchangeable. Goalrilla's page: compatible with Goalrilla units with 5x5, 5.5x5.5, 6x6 or 6x8 poles, not the Fixed Height models, with brackets for those sizes and an adapter for the Universal Pole Pad. Silverback's page: installs on 4x4 square poles, fits SB60, SB60 Ghost, SB54, SB54iG, SBX60, SBX54 and SBX54iG plus Goaliath and Hoopstar, and is “NOT compatible with Goalrilla.” The direct-bury NXT in-grounds say on their own pages that they are not compatible with the Yard Guard. Lifetime and Spalding do not sell a yard guard we could find on their sites, which is where the Goaliath return net comes in: it attaches to the pole with two fillable anchors and Escalade says it works with most in-ground hoops. Decide the guard before the hoop if the driveway slopes to the street; it changes which pole you buy.
The numbers
What a guard does and does not do
A yard guard behind and beside the hoop catches the long rebound and the airball that would otherwise cross the lawn or the street; it is 7 to 9 feet tall, so a shot that sails over the backboard sails over the guard too. It does not return the ball to the shooter (that is a rebounder, ranked here), and it does not stop a ball that bounces off the front rim toward the house. Both Escalade guards fold along the pole when the game is over, which matters for a driveway that is also where the cars go.

Buyer's guide: yard guards
Measure the pole before you order
Square poles are marked on the product page; if you do not know your model, measure a face. Four inches is Silverback/Goaliath; five and up is Goalrilla; round is NXT or GoTek and fits neither guard.
Height adjustment still works
Goalrilla's page says the hoop's height still adjusts with the guard mounted; the guard brackets sit below the actuator. Silverback's folds with straps and clips.
Warranties are short
Ninety days on the Goalrilla guard and the Goaliath net; none published on the Silverback guard. A nylon net in sun is a wear item; expect to replace the netting in a few years.
Pair it with a pole pad
The Goalrilla guard includes an adapter for the Universal Pole Pad; the Silverback guard's straps sit above the Silverback pole pad. Players hit the pole more when a net is behind it. Pads are in the gear hub.

What is the best basketball yard guard?
The one that fits your pole. Goalrilla's Yard Guard (153 inches wide, 7-9 ft tall) for 5x5 to 6x8 Goalrilla poles; the Silverback Yard Guard (over 10 ft wide, 8 ft tall) for 4x4 Silverback and Goaliath poles; the Goaliath return net for most other in-ground poles.
Does the Silverback Yard Guard fit a Goalrilla?
No. Silverback's page says it is not compatible with Goalrilla; Goalrilla's Yard Guard fits its 5x5 and larger poles.
Can you put a yard guard on a portable basketball hoop?
Not the Escalade guards; they mount to in-ground square poles. For a portable, a free-standing rebounder against the base catches low balls, and the Silverback NXT pages say their portable rebounder sets up against the NXT 54 and 50.
Does a yard guard stop the height adjustment?
No. Goalrilla's page says the goal still adjusts from 7.5 to 10 feet with the guard installed.
