What makes a driveway game, as opposed to a backyard one
Search for family games and you get lists written for a lawn: croquet hoops pushed into turf, spike-ball nets that want a soft landing, giant Jenga on a flat patch of grass. A driveway is none of those things. It is typically 16 to 24 feet wide and two or three times that long, it is concrete or asphalt, it usually falls away from the garage for drainage, and for several hours a day there is a car on it.
That changes which games survive. Anything that needs stakes in the ground is out. Anything that needs a ball to stop rather than roll has to contend with a slope. Anything with a hard projectile has a garage door and a car panel within range. And anything that takes twenty minutes to set up will be played once.
The upside is real, though, and it is why this page exists: the driveway is the only part of most properties that is flat, hard, drains in minutes after rain, and sits within sight of the kitchen window. A game that fits it gets played on a Tuesday evening in a way that a garden game never does. The hoop is already there — the driveway hoop guide covers that half — and these six are what shares the slab with it.
How these were ranked, before any product
Five criteria, in the order they actually decide a purchase.
- 1. The shape of slab it needs. This is the top criterion and the one every other list ignores. Cornhole needs length — regulation play is 27 feet from the front edge of one board to the front of the other, which is driveway depth, not width. Pickleball needs width, and a regulation net is 22 feet across, wider than most two-car driveways. Bocce, ladder toss and chalk need no particular shape at all. Match the game to the concrete and you will play it; buy it the other way around and it lives in the garage.
- 2. Setup time. A game that is already out gets played. Bocce is a case you open. Ladder toss is one frame. A pickleball net is a five-to-ten-minute build the first time and a few minutes after that. Cornhole boards are heavy enough that where they are stored decides how often they come out.
- 3. What it does to the property. Concrete is unforgiving and a garage door is a large flat target. Soft-rubber bolos and resin bocce balls are safe near a car; a hard projectile at speed is not. Chalk washes off. Nothing here needs a stake, which matters on a slab.
- 4. The age span it covers. The best driveway game is one a six-year-old and a forty-year-old can play in the same round without a handicap. Ladder toss and bocce clear that bar; cornhole mostly does; pickleball does not until a child is eight or so.
- 5. Weather and storage. Resin and rubber live outdoors. Wooden cornhole boards do not, and nylon netting on steel posts should not. This is the criterion that quietly decides whether a set survives three summers.
What is deliberately not a criterion: brand. Three of the six here are GoSports, not because the brand was chosen first but because GoSports is the one maker publishing real contents and dimensions on the lawn-game sets that were in stock when this page was researched.
The numbers
Read the warranty column first. Six products, zero published terms. That is normal for lawn games and it is worth knowing before you spend a hundred dollars: what you have is the retailer's return window, not coverage. The pickleball category is slightly better on this — one of the six nets in best driveway pickleball sets publishes an 18-month term — but the lawn games publish nothing at all.
Measure the driveway before you buy any of this
Ten minutes with a tape saves a return. Three numbers decide everything on this page:
- Usable length, from the garage door to the sidewalk or the point where the slope gets serious. Thirty feet or more and cornhole plays at regulation distance. Under about 24 and you are playing a shortened game, which is fine for children and annoying for adults.
- Usable width at the widest point. A 22-foot pickleball net needs the driveway turned lengthways — set the net along the slab with the players at either end, not across it. That one orientation change is the difference between a net that fits and a net that overhangs the grass on both sides.
- The fall. Most driveways drop an inch per foot or so away from the house. Bocce rolls downhill, which is either a feature or the end of the game depending on how steep yours is. Roll a ball down it before you buy a bocce set.
If the slab is already marked up for basketball, those lines help: a free-throw lane makes a serviceable cornhole alley and a usable pickleball kitchen. Painting court lines on a driveway covers doing it permanently, and driveway chalk games and court ideas covers doing it in chalk first to see whether the layout works.

- Wood and weather are a storage problem the resin games do not have
Skip this if…
…the driveway is short or the set would live outdoors year-round; bocce plays in any shape of space and resin does not care about rain.

Buyer's guide: making a driveway into a games space
Work out the regulation distances before you commit to a game
Cornhole regulation is 27 feet between the front edges of the two boards. Pickleball is a 20 by 44 foot court with a 22-foot net, and USA Pickleball's rules summary puts the non-volley zone within 7 feet of the net on both sides. Bocce has no court requirement at all in casual play. Those three facts sort most driveways into “cornhole”, “pickleball lengthways” or “bocce” without any further thought.
Shorten the game rather than skipping it
A 20-foot cornhole pitch is a perfectly good family game and the standard recommendation for younger players anyway. Chalk two throw lines at whatever distance your slab allows and move them back as the children grow. The regulation figure matters only if somebody is practicing for a league.
Decide where it is stored before you buy it
This is the criterion that actually predicts whether a game is still in use next summer. Bocce and ladder toss come in cases that hang on a garage hook. A pickleball net packs into a bag. Two wooden cornhole boards are bulky, heavy and must not live outside — if the only storage is behind the car, they will stay there.
Keep the hard projectiles away from the garage door
Set throwing games so the overthrow lands on grass or a fence, not on a door panel or a parked car. Soft-rubber bolos and bean bags are forgiving; resin bocce balls at speed on concrete are not, and a pickleball off a paddle is quick. If the slab runs straight at the house, play across it rather than toward it, and consider a yard guard or driveway net — the same net that stops basketballs reaching the street stops everything else too.
Buy the chalk first, every time
Twenty dollars of chalk will tell you in an afternoon whether a 27-foot cornhole pitch or a 22-foot net actually fits, and children will get a week of use out of it regardless. It is the only purchase on this page that cannot be wrong.
Expect to replace the consumables, not the sets
Bean bags split, bolos get lost over fences and chalk is gone by August. GoSports sells replacement bag and bolo sets; the frames and boards outlast them by years. Budget for the small stuff and the sets themselves are a one-time purchase.
How we picked
What earns a pick on this page
Every pick here is built from figures you can check for yourself: the maker's published backboard, pole, overhang and adjustment specs; the hole size, bag count and cure time printed in its install manual; the warranty term in the maker's own wording, exclusions included, with the date we read it; and the failure patterns owners report (base cracking, backboard fogging, two-piece pole lean), which shape the “skip this if” line. Every figure links to where it came from.
Those figures go through one fixed rubric, so an 8.1 here means the same thing as an 8.1 anywhere else on the site and the top pick is the one that earns it for the driveway it is named for. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.
Questions
Frequently asked
What are the best games to play on a driveway?
Ranked by the slab each needs: cornhole if you have the length (regulation is 27 feet between board edges), bocce if the driveway is short, sloped or awkward, pickleball if you want a real sport and can turn a 22-foot net along the slab rather than across it, ladder toss as the safest throwing game near a car, and chalk games for children under about six.
How much space does driveway cornhole need?
Regulation play is 27 feet from the front edge of one board to the front edge of the other, plus standing room behind each. That is driveway length, not width, so measure from the garage door toward the street. A shorter pitch of around 20 feet is the normal recommendation for younger players and plays perfectly well.
Can you play pickleball on a driveway?
Yes, with one orientation change: set the net along the driveway with players at either end, because a regulation net is 22 feet wide and most two-car driveways are narrower than that. A full court is 20 by 44 feet, which few driveways have, so most people play a shortened court. Best driveway pickleball sets ranks the nets on exactly this.
Will these games damage a concrete driveway or a car?
Bean bags, soft-rubber bolos and chalk will not. Resin bocce balls can chip a slab edge and will mark a car panel if thrown at it, so set the game so overthrows land on grass. Nothing on this page needs a stake in the ground, which is the main reason lawn games are usually unsuitable for a driveway.
Do any of these come with a warranty?
No. All six listings were read on 2026-10-19 and not one publishes a warranty term. What you have is the retailer's return window rather than coverage, which is normal for this category and worth knowing before spending around a hundred dollars on a cornhole set.
What is the best driveway game for a wide age range?
Ladder toss and bocce. Both can be played competitively by a six-year-old and an adult in the same round without a handicap, both need no setup, and both pack into a case. Cornhole mostly clears that bar too; pickleball does not until a child is around eight.
