What breakaway means
On a standard rim the ring is welded to a plate that bolts to the backboard; when a 150-lb player hangs on the front of the ring, all of that leverage goes into the plate, the bolts and the glass behind them. On a breakaway rim the ring is hinged to the plate and held level by a spring (or two); past a set load the hinge gives, the ring drops a few degrees, and the spring returns it when the load comes off. The makers describe it the same way: Silverback's “pro-style breakaway rim that flexes under pressure,” Spalding's “ultra-smooth spring breakaway action,” Lifetime's Slam-It “double-compression springs for spring-back action.” The board survives, the rim stays level, and the wrist that hung on it is not stopped dead.
Single-spring, double-spring, 180
Single-spring (Silverback standard and deluxe, Goalrilla medium-weight, Spalding Slam Jam): one spring, breaks forward. Double-compression (Lifetime Slam-It Pro and Ultra, Pro Dunk's dual-spring): two springs, firmer return, still forward. 180-degree (Goalrilla 180, Mega Slam's 180 Pro Rim upgrade): breaks front-to-back and side-to-side, so a hang from the corner of the ring also gives; Goalrilla's page adds a recessed net attachment with no ram's-horn so fingers do not catch. Weight matters too: a heavy-weight rim (Goalrilla's FT/CV rim, Pro Dunk's 25-lb ring) rebounds truer and rattles less than a light one, which is why the premium hoops ship them.
Who needs one
Hanging and the warranty
A breakaway rim protects the hoop; it does not protect the warranty. Goalrilla's sheet: “HANGING ON RIM WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY: Rims are not warranted for any defects other than workmanship. Torn back plates, damaged springs, bent rings, damaged eyebolts, and torn or distorted rim supports result from hanging on the rim and are not warranted.” The Silverback manual says the same. Spalding excludes “hanging.” Pro Dunk and Mega Slam say their lifetime terms cover dunking and hanging; that difference is most of the argument for those two direct-only makers in Goalrilla vs Pro Dunk.

What does breakaway rim mean?
A rim hinged at its mounting plate on a spring, so a dunk or hang tips the ring down and it springs back instead of loading the backboard. A standard (static) rim is welded solid.
Is a breakaway rim better than a regular rim?
For any player who can reach the rim, yes: it protects the backboard, the rim and the player. Every full-size hoop we rank ships with one; static rims are on small starter portables.
Can you hang on a breakaway rim?
It is built to survive it, but Goalrilla, Silverback and Spalding all say hanging voids the warranty; Pro Dunk and Mega Slam say their terms cover dunking and hanging.
What is a 180-degree breakaway rim?
A rim that flexes side-to-side as well as front-to-back (Goalrilla 180, Mega Slam 180 Pro Rim), so a hang from the corner of the ring also gives; usually with a recessed net attachment.
