How long does a basketball hoop last? By type, by what fails, and by what the makers will warrant

Goalrilla's two-to-five-year figure deserves its caveat: it is a claim by a company that sells the expensive alternative, made in a blog post arguing for it. It is also consistent with what portable owners commonly report, which is that the base, not the steel, decides the hoop's life. We have no fleet data of our own and do not pretend to.

What fails, in order

The net, first and always: a nylon net in sun and rain lasts a season or two; Goalrilla and Spalding sell UV-resistant replacements for $5 to $15. The portable base: a crack at the socket from a half-seated pole joint or a tip-over, a split seam from frozen water, a slow leak that leaves the hoop light. The crank handle, which walks away; Goalrilla sells a locking replacement. The board surface on polycarbonate and acrylic: scratches and haze over years, which change the look and, on polycarbonate, the rebound. Paint at the ground line on any in-ground pole: water sits where the pole meets the concrete, the powder coat chips, and rust starts. Every maker excludes rust (Goalrilla's sheet: “paint or rusted parts”; Lifetime and Spalding likewise), and Goalrilla sells paint kits. The rim if anyone hangs on it, which every Escalade warranty says voids coverage and which Pro Dunk and Mega Slam say theirs covers. What the warranties cover

Goalrilla: “all structural components of the Goalrilla System to be free of defects in material and workmanship for the duration of ownership by the original retail purchaser,” with hanging on the rim, paint and rust, and shipping both ways excluded. Silverback: 5-year limited on the product pages, Limited 7 Year in the SB60 manual, hanging excluded. Lifetime: 5 years on most basketball systems, tempered glass breakage, rust and improper installation excluded. Spalding: 1 year, original purchaser, hanging, rust and weather deterioration excluded. Pro Dunk and Mega Slam: lifetime, covering dunking and hanging, with Mega Slam adding a one-time backboard replacement. A warranty is a floor on the maker's confidence, not a prediction; the exclusions are the list of what the maker expects to fail. Brands explained has the table.

Making it last longer

• Fill a portable base with sand, not water; drain or bring it in before a hard freeze.
• Seat multi-piece pole joints fully at assembly, and check them each spring.
• Finish an in-ground footing above grade and sloped away from the pole; touch up the ground line when the paint chips.
• Keep the crank handle on a hook, and lock it if the neighborhood adjusts your rim.
• Replace the net before it frays into the rim hooks; a $10 net is cheaper than a rim.
• Do not hang on the rim, because that is the line every warranty draws.
