Sand or water, decided properly
Every portable base on the market is a moulded plastic tank with a screw cap, and every maker says the same thing: fill with sand or water. They are not equivalent.
| Sand | Water | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight per gallon of volume | Substantially heavier | 8.34 lb |
| Freezes and expands? | No | Yes — the main cause of split bases |
| Leaks out of a crack? | Barely | Completely, and quietly |
| Evaporates? | No | Slowly, through the cap |
| Effort to fill | High: bags, a funnel, patience | Low: a hose |
| Effort to empty | High: wet sand has to be scooped | Low: siphon or tip |
| Cost | A few dollars a bag | Free |
The honest summary is that sand is the right answer and water is the convenient one. If the hoop moves in and out of a garage weekly, water is defensible — how to move a portable hoop covers shifting a filled base without draining it, which is usually easier than people expect.
The weights, worked out
Makers publish base capacity in gallons, not pounds, so the useful number takes one step of arithmetic. Water weighs 8.34 lb per US gallon.
Put those numbers next to what the hoop has to resist. A 54-inch board is a sail in a gust, and a teenager pulling down on the rim applies a lever several feet long. Two hundred and twenty-five pounds at the bottom of that lever is not much. Wind and tipping works through the geometry and the anchoring options.
Getting sand in, which is the only hard part
The fill cap on most bases is two or three inches across, which is not generous. The method that works:
- Buy dry play sand or paver sand, in 50-lb bags, and keep it dry until it goes in. Damp sand bridges and will not pour.
- Make a funnel from a cut-down plastic bottle or buy a wide one. A length of 2-inch pipe into the cap works even better.
- Pour slowly and shake the base every few bags. Sand finds its own level reluctantly, and an unshaken base will read full while there is a void at the far end.
- Fill the hoop in position, with the pole assembled and standing. A filled base is not something you then wheel across a lawn.
- Seal the cap properly. Sand plus rainwater through a loose cap makes a cement-like sludge you will never get out.
If you use water
Fill from a hose to the maker's capacity, with the hoop standing in its final position, and seal the cap. Then two maintenance jobs follow. Check the level at the start of every season, because water evaporates through the cap and a base can be twenty per cent down by spring. And in a freezing climate, deal with it before winter: water expands when it freezes and a plastic base is the thing that gives.
Do not put automotive antifreeze in a basketball base. It is toxic to animals and children, it will be in your driveway, and there is nothing to protect in there — the base is not an engine. Portable hoop winter storage covers what to do instead, including whether to drain at all.
Adding weight on top
Every maker's published capacity is a compromise between stability and what two adults can wheel. The standard fix is ballast on top of the base: Escalade's universal weight bag holds up to 100 lb of sand, is built to sit on most portable bases, and is rated by its maker for rain, snow and sun.
A sandbag or two from a hardware store does the same job less tidily. What you should not do is stack cinder blocks on a moulded base — the point loads crack the plastic over a season, and the blocks become a trip hazard right where people land.

Ballast, and the bases with published capacities
The weight bag is the upgrade every portable benefits from. The three hoops below are the ones whose base capacity their makers actually publish, so you can do the arithmetic.

Four mistakes worth not making
- Filling before assembly. Assemble the pole and board first, stand the hoop where it lives, then fill. A full base weighs more than two people want to move.
- Stopping at “mostly full”. The published capacity is a minimum, not a target range.
- Using damp sand. It will not flow through the cap and it sets into a lump.
- Leaving the cap loose. Rain in a sand-filled base is how you get a tank you can never empty.
Get all four right and the hoop is as stable as its design allows. If it still rocks after that, the cause is elsewhere: how to stop a hoop from shaking works through hardware, footing and pole splices in order.
How we picked
What earns a pick on this page
Every pick here is built from figures you can check for yourself: the maker's published backboard, pole, overhang and adjustment specs; the hole size, bag count and cure time printed in its install manual; the warranty term in the maker's own wording, exclusions included, with the date we read it; and the failure patterns owners report (base cracking, backboard fogging, two-piece pole lean), which shape the “skip this if” line. Every figure links to where it came from.
Those figures go through one fixed rubric, so an 8.1 here means the same thing as an 8.1 anywhere else on the site and the top pick is the one that earns it for the driveway it is named for. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.
Questions
Frequently asked
Should I fill my portable basketball hoop base with sand or water?
Sand, if the hoop is staying in one place. Dry sand is appreciably heavier than the same volume of water, it does not freeze and split the base, and it does not quietly leak out of a crack. Water is the right choice only if you need to drain and move the hoop regularly. A good middle path is water to capacity plus a 100 lb sand weight bag on top of the base.
How much does a filled portable basketball hoop base weigh?
Water weighs 8.34 lb per US gallon, so a 27-gallon base comes to about 225 lb, a 31-gallon base about 259 lb, a 35-gallon base about 292 lb and a 36-gallon base about 300 lb. Sand in the same tanks is heavier again. Add the hoop's own weight on top of that.
How do you get sand into a portable basketball hoop base?
Use dry play or paver sand, a wide funnel or a length of 2-inch pipe into the fill cap, and pour slowly, shaking the base every few bags so the sand levels instead of bridging. Do it with the hoop assembled and standing in its final position, and seal the cap tightly afterwards so rain cannot get in.
Can you put antifreeze in a basketball hoop base?
Don't. Automotive antifreeze is toxic to pets and children and it will end up on your driveway and in the storm drain. There is nothing inside a base worth protecting — if freezing is the concern, fill with sand instead, or drain the water before winter.
Can you move a portable hoop with a full base?
Usually yes. Most bases have wheels and a tilt point, and the makers design them to be walked wheelbarrow-style by one or two adults — Escalade calls its version ErgoMove. Draining a water base is only worth it for a long move or a move across grass. How to move a portable hoop has the method.
