What counts as a mini hoop

A mini hoop is any hoop with a board under about three feet wide and a rim well under the regulation 18 inches. That covers three mounts, and the mount is the first decision, not the last. Over-the-door minis hook over a door and come down in a second, which is why they end up in bedrooms, offices and dorm rooms. Wall-mounted minis screw into framing and stay. Pole-mounted minis clamp to the pole of a hoop you already own, so a six-year-old gets a rim at their height while the 10-foot rim stays where it is.

The numbers

Dunking, and what it breaks

Mini hoops die in one of two ways. Either the rim is rigid and the force goes into the bracket, which pulls the screws or splits the door frame, or the board is too small and the ball comes back off the rim into a lamp. A breakaway rim solves the first problem, which is why all three door hoops here have one: SKLZ calls it a break-away rim, Spalding publishes a 180-degree breakaway. The second problem is board width, and it is the reason the 28-inch Spalding sits at the top of this list and an 18-inch novelty hoop is not on it at all.

The one thing no mini hoop survives is being hung on. A 200-pound adult hanging from a $35 rim is outside every design brief on this page, and the door frame loses first.

The pole-mounted option most people miss

If the driveway already has an in-ground hoop, a mini does not need a wall at all. The Silverback Junior clamps to any round or square pole from 3 to 6 inches with Escalade's Lock 'n Rock mount, so a 33-inch board with a 14-inch spring rim can sit at four feet on the same pole holding the big rim at ten. Buyer's guide: picking a mini hoop

Measure the door, not the hoop

Over-door brackets are built for a standard interior door, roughly 1 3/8 inches thick. A hollow-core door will take the SKLZ hoops happily and will feel the Spalding, which is bigger and heavier. A door with trim right up to the frame may not take a bracket at all, in which case buy the wall-mount route and accept the screw holes.

Board width is the playability spec

Under about 20 inches, bank shots are luck. At 23 inches (the SKLZ XL) they start to behave. At 28 inches (the Spalding) the board plays like a small version of a real one. Nothing else on a mini hoop's spec sheet changes the game as much.

Insist on a breakaway rim

Every hoop here has one. It is the difference between a hoop that survives a dunk and a hoop that takes the bracket, and the door frame, with it.

Check what ball comes in the box

The SKLZ hoops ship with a rubber mini ball; Spalding ships a 5-inch mini ball; the Silverback Junior includes a 7-inch ball, a pump and a needle. A full-size basketball on a mini rim is how boards crack.

Know when a mini is the wrong answer
