What weather does to a hoop
Sun fogs and yellows acrylic and polycarbonate over years; tempered glass stays clear, which is the main reason glass boards cost more. Rain and freeze-thaw find the ground line of a steel pole, where owners of powder-coated in-grounds commonly report rust after a decade; every maker here excludes rust from its warranty (Goalrilla says so in its sheet, Spalding and Lifetime in theirs) and Goalrilla offers paint kits. Wind tips a portable with a half-empty base and does nothing to an in-ground. Cold makes nets brittle and a hollow base of water a block of ice, which is why the makers say sand or drain it in winter. The hoops below are ranked on the specs that resist those four things: board material, pole finish and size, anchor or base, and what the warranty actually says about outdoor damage.

Tempered glass is the right outdoor board because it does not degrade in sun, and the wrong one only if something hard hits it: a bat, a rock from a mower, a fall in a storm. Lifetime's backboard guide says polycarbonate “does not crack or chip” and is “stronger even than acrylic,” and that is true; it also rebounds softer and scratches. For a driveway with a mower next to it and kids with bats, the NXT's polycarbonate is a rational outdoor choice. For everyone else, glass, with the board padding most of these hoops include. Buyer's guide: an outdoor hoop that stays outdoors
Fill portable bases with sand, not water, if it freezes
Water expands when it freezes and the base is plastic. Sand does not freeze, weighs more per gallon, and does not leak out of a hairline crack. The makers list both; in a freeze-thaw climate, sand. A 100-lb weight bag on top helps in wind. Wind and tipping has the ballast math.
Keep the pole pad and net in the budget
Nets are the first thing weather kills; a UV-resistant nylon net is $5-$15 and worth keeping a spare of. A pole pad is for players, not weather, but the Silverback and Goaliath hoops include one and Goalrilla charges $190.
Put the anchor above grade
Both the Goalrilla and Silverback manuals recommend a form for the top 4 inches so the concrete finishes at or just above court level; water that pools at the pole base is how the ground line rusts. Slope the top of the footing away from the pole when you pour.
