On a garage, the practical checklist is: find the header or the studs, confirm the wall is framing and sheathing rather than brick veneer, and use structural lag screws sized for the arm you are hanging. A 3-foot arm applies more leverage to those fasteners than a 5-inch one, which is the trade for the clearance.

Protecting the door
